Jõhvi Russian Basic School (Estonian: Jõhvi Vene Põhikool)
is a basic school located in the heart of Jõhvi, a town in north-eastern Estonia,
and the capital of Ida-Viru County.
The school, originally an eight-year
basic school, was founded in 1967. In 1975, the school became a gymnasium, an
upper secondary school. It retained this status until 2015—when the local
school system was reorganized—and remains a nine-year basic school today.
In 2018, the school’s building underwent major renovations. By September 2020, the school’s stadium is going to be renovated as well. As of September 2019, the school had 513 students and 48 teachers.

Within the school itself, teamwork
among the staff is constantly encouraged and promoted with the intention to
enable the students to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to empower
them to take charge of their learning.
The Estonian language immersion
program is used in the school. The program requires for at least 60% of the
studying to take place in Estonian, the target language. Immersion does not
negatively affect the student’s ability to speak their first language. On
December 5, 2019, Jõhvi Russian Basic School received an award from Foundation Innove, “Immersion School 2019 in Leadership and Administration.”
The teachers employed by the school
are professional educators, who teach creatively, teach integrated lessons, and work
within the “Enterprising School” program.
The school has its own traditions
and yearly events: Knowledge Day, School of Development, “Farewell to the
ABCs,” “Mustival” vocal competition, School Olympic Games, Dance Week,
Christmas volleyball tournament, the last bell ceremony, Project Days.
Numerous CAS activities, interest
groups, and clubs are also available: “What? Where? When?”, an intellectual
game club; “Edelweiss” Theater Studio; “Pääsuke” Dance
Group, etc.
Students of Jõhvi Russian Basic School regularly
take part in various regional and international competitions and contests:
“Dances of the World’s Nations”
“Meetings in Lovati"
” IAAF Kids’ Athletics"
"Jõhvi Jumper
Day "
and many others.
The school is a regular participant
and creator of
several state and regional projects:
